Now Firing! Real Marketing Recession Or Who Moved My Cheese?

Do you remember that book with the two Mice called Hem and Haw in the book Who Moved My Cheese? That’s what all this talk about the economy being in a recession reminds me of.

The other day I passed a sign that read in 3 foot letters on the side of a building, "Now Hiring". My first thought was, "I wondered if they’re  hiring because of all the people they just fired, or are they expanding even in a so-called recession?"

Could be a mix of both.

Lately, I’ve been receiving quite a few emails about the recession. It’s mostly from marketers sharing information that will help recession-proof my income or help me start a business and profit in a recession.

One headline that came in from eZineQueen.com’s Ali Brown said, "Recession Rescue… ". John Carlton sends: "I’ve heard some nice things about Jay Abraham’s "How To Create Multiple Streams of Recessionary Income Sources" calls… "

Jeff Walker adds, "Recession or no recession… this is a magical time to be in business online ."

Who are These Guys, Kidding?

Are they all crazy?

Is there really money to be made or has all the money gone away?

With all the worry going on it’s easy to believe in the illusion of a recession. However, to me, it looks like a classic case of "Who Moved My Cheese".

What we are witnessing is a readjustment in the paradigms of how to make money and create financial security.

It’s become a society of mutually beneficial or bust!

Employers no longer want to pay by the week or by the hour. It no longer supports a mutually beneficial business relationship. They know 90+% of us work just hard enough to not get fired, that’s why they pay you just enough so you don’t quit, at least not before they are ready to fire you.

People with an employees/entitlement mentality cost to darn much.

So they are firing people like you… er, them.

And because many employees lack the skills and knowledge to take advantage of this "new economy" We cry foul! Recession! And try to get bail-outs and stimulus checks… and even continue to look for another job, usually paying less, not learning our lesson.

The Real Money Is Inside You

In case you haven’t noticed, the cheese has officially been moved.  I repeat: The cheese has officially been moved.  Whatever skill you have developed over the years in your current or past profession, learn how to turn that into a marketable asset.

Look  into your passions and see what is leverage-able among them. It’s time to write that book, sing that song, start that website, learn that marketing skill, teach that class. That’s where the value is.   That’s where money is.

As long as you keep looking for one company or the next to be your golden parachute you will continue to be the victim in the stampede of others doing the same   All the while, other savvy entrepreneurial minded citizens will be blazing the trail to where the new fresh cheese is now…

Leave others to fighting recent high school grads and the "semi-retired" elderly for jobs that require funny hats and not a MBA.

There is no less money or opportunity in the world today… people are just spending it differently and in different places. Your job is to figure out where it’s going, and get there as quickly as you can.

Malika excellent article. The cheese really has been moved. People’s wealth is inside of them. People have mentality of what jobs used to be 20 years ago but it is not same anymore. I agree money exists and we just need to find where.

    Again you rock girl!

Great article Malika! Whenever you hear the words recession and firing. It automatically puts people minds in a sad or depress state of mind. We are facing a case of Who Moved My Cheese? I was always told the wealthy people in our economy always make money no matter what state our economy is in. Those who fail just don’t keep up with the time and technology.

I have been job searching for a couple of months. My background has been in the auto industry as a finance manager. I purchased the “Who moved my cheese?” cd a few years ago. Your website has just reinformed me of what I need to do to re-establish myself. I know that I want to work as an account representative for a US company. I am confident in my sales skills but your website has just reminded me of the basics. Our current economy in the United States, especially Ohio, forces me to re-examine my strengths in all areas. Thanks again for my personal reminder!

Effective online marketing is so much more important in a recession, much more so that it was during the boom of the past few years. Good post, keep it coming!
