My Story Marketing: 8 Steps to a Must Read “About Me” Page

28 December 2009

Your “about” page on your site will be one of the most popular pages on your website, blog and even social media profiles.

So why not make sure it’s doing it’s job of selling you as someone worthy of doing business with?

Your Prospective Leads, Prospects and Buyers Will Read it

I get comments and complements on my about me and bio’s all the time and I’ve even won a “Magnetic Profile” contest on the Internet’s #1 community for home based and independent business owners, BetterNetworker.com. Now, it’s confirmed by Google analytics: your site visitors want to know who they are doing business with.

So, today I’m going to share with you my million dollar formula on the 8 steps to creating a must read and highly converting about me page. Many big time marketers don’t even know this stuff so if you are savvy you will take note and blow past your competition with ease

No. 1 is Where You are Now

This is where you are now that your prospects desire to be, do or have: More dates, better health, more leads, more money, longer vacations, better marriage, a respected coach, personal power, influence, etc. This is important to establish credibility to lead your prospects to “the promise land”.

No. 2 is your “Before I was Great” Situation

…But, things weren’t always this great. Just ____ years/months/weeks ago, I was just like you…”. Your credibility may be a little intimidating so now it’s time to show your venerability. This is important because your starting situation probably has a lot of overlap with your prospect’s current situation.

Element No. 3 is Tried and Failed.

If you can communicate vivid emotional stories of trying and failing, they will earn you a lot of credibility and they will help your prospect relate to you.

No. 4 is Breakthrough: Where you had your breakthrough

Where you learned something that miraculously worked; you accidentally stumbled upon the magic formula; you met the guru who gave you the keys to the kingdom.

Element No. 5 is you started achieving Consistent Results.

This is when you got it. You finally understood it, “Ah, I get it.” The results became consistent and predictable.

No. 6 – this is where you transcend – I Created a Method

“I created a method I call _____ based on trying and failing, having my breakthrough and then getting consistent results in getting it.”

Element No. 7 is Other Did It Too.

“I taught some other folks and they got consistent results and now you can learn. I want to show you the system that I created.”

Element No. 8: Now, You Can Learn.

“Here, I will teach you how it’s done.. in the shortest time and with even better results. All you need to do is….”

Below, you can cut and paste into your favorite text editor (I prefer Google Docs) and start filling in the blanks.

1. Where you are now…

2. Starting Situation

3. Tried and Failed

4. The Breakthrough

5. Consistent Results

6. I Created a Method

7. Others Did It too

8. And Now You Can Learn

Other Writing and Styling Tips

If at all possible use images to help tell your story. Images pull your reader in better than text alone and it slow your reader down a bit. Over all it improve the attraction and ‘stickiness’ of your writing.

Making it into a video and giving your readers a multi-media experience of your about me page it good too. Just don’t let it replace your text… some readers won’t be able to watch your video but virtually all can and will read it.

Give your story a catchy easy to see headline that compels your reader to read it then keep reading. Use subheadlines to break up your text and remember that sentence spacing and styling enhance your “read-ability”.

Where You Can Use This

If you have a blog, website or any social network there is usually a space or page for you to create your “about me” section.

MySpace, for example, thrives off of the “about me” section that is prominently displayed front and center on your profile page. Some of our network marketing friends became flat out lead generation super stars off of this method using this site ALONE.

If you don’t want to always have to think up of something cool to say each time you create a new account and you want to save time, a well thought out pre-written response is your ace in the hole.

Malika, good reminders. My page that introduces me needs work and I'm going to get to it. I also want to do a video on it. Thanks for sharing and glad we're linked on Twitter too. -

    Hey Laurie,

Do me a favor and link to your revised page when you are done. I’d love to see how you implement these principles in your business as a life coach.

Great website BTW! I modified your name to give you a quality link back to your site too.

Hey @AdviceMaven I see you didn’t have a link back to your website with your about page that needs updating… Is it really that bad? LOL! If you look on your Google Analytics account you’ll see whether your about me page is as highly read as I suspect it is.

Most site visitors always want to know if they can relate to the publisher of the content they are reading/watching. Especially if they want to hire you or work with you as a partner… Be sure to catch me on FB or twitter with a link to the new & improved page!
