Here Are The Top Ten Reasons Why Your Website and Marketing Fail At Lead Generation And How To Make Sure YOU Avoid Every One Of
These Business Killing Common Mistakes…
1. Joining Too Many Social Networks
Select social network according to who your target market and product is. Niche social networks can be very effective for building relations and mastermind groups even though the may be small.
For example, since I’m mom I joined a social network called www.TwitterMoms.com and became the moderator of a group called The Savvy Business Moms. With about 800 members and growing organically everyday it has more activity and discussions than some entire social networks.
This is a great sign that I should invest sometime here…
However just today I deleted my profile from HomeBasedBusiness.com because the community is older yet slower growing and riddled with spam. The quality of the relationships that come from this site were poor and therefore was not a good investment of time/effort.
Even large sites like FaceBook and Myspace that have groups related to topics that are niche and market specific have signs to look for that tell you weather it worth the investment or not.
2. Having a Sorry @$$ "About Me Section"
I can’t stress enough how popular your about me section of your site is. It pains me to tears how little effort some business(es)/ owners put into creating it.
I was excited to see a profile contest (where I was one of 5 winners) that explained the structure and the power of having a personal, believable and funny "About Me" section.
That means short and sweet will get you overlooked and easily forgotten… not a good look for someone who is looking to attract leads by gain friends and influence people.
3. Adding Friends Just to "Pad the Numbers"
Let me tell you a quick story about a "friend" that I personally would never add even if I were related to them.
The problem started and ended with the profile name: "The Realest Nigga In Dade County". eMail me if you’d like further explanation of why that name will get your friend request ignored/deleted.
Imagine, your new to a social network looking to attract mutually beneficial relationships with business minded, savvy entrepreneurs… You have 5 friends and one of them happens to be the self proclaimed : "The Realest Nigga In Dade County".
I probably would add YOU as my friend if he were in your top friends list.
Having a million friend with whom you have no relationship with will serve you as much as not having any at all. It’s all about how many are following, listening to and interacting with you not just how many are on the list.
4. Not Researching Your websites "Theme/Message" Thoroughly Enough
I get questions from marketers just starting out in Lead Generation on the Internet about how to drive traffic to their websites. The first thing I do is look at the website they want to send the traffic too. That is where the answer to the question lies.
Invariable, the most common problem is the website doesn’t sort well enough as to whom it is speaking.
If your customer doesn’t know beyond a shadow of the doubt that your website is specifically for people like them, that back button will be your worst enemy.
Having a well focused theme/topic will reduce this problem because a bigger percent of the traffic that lands on your site will stay regardless of the quantity of that said traffic.
I also strongly recommend you choose target market that you are already naturally in.
It’s easy to relate to people with whom you share common problems and passion for the solutions.
The reason website themes are research enough is because the website owners are too busy thinking/talking about what they are trying to sell. Trying to find "hot products that virtually sell themselves" instead of identifying a large group of people to whom you can sell it to first is a symptom of the next mistake…
5. Overly Focused on the "Sale"
How do you loose friends and repel prospects in 60 second flat? Over-hype, over promise, over-pitch and under deliver too soon in a relationship.
Loosing sight of why your potential prospects should buy from you in the first place is a sure fire way to lose them fast and furiously.
Remember, the only reason anyone has to give you their money in because they have convinced themselves you can solve a specific problem for them.
So where should your focus be then?
It should be on proving you are the right person to take that advice from that’s where. Focus on demonstrating you have a clear understanding of their problem (s) and you are familiar with possible solutions, misconceptions, do’s-and-don’ts, etc.
Don’t just though up a bunch of pomp and circumstance about how great the product is or it’s benefits without clearly relating it to solving a specific problem.
In a word it’s called "value"…. Value in the reasons to do business with someone like you instead of the snake oil sales person peddling the same/similar products and/or services.
Isn’t that how you choose who you bought your last widget/eBook from?
6. Not Enough Marketing Training
Like training for any other competitive sport, marketing training is important to marketers. And just in case you think that’s not you let me just clear it up for you.
If you have a business and you don’t have am out sourced marketing and PR department then you, if you intend on being in business for any length of time, have the position of head marketer for your business.
As a network marketer, which we all are whether officially of unofficially, it is in your job description!
As a mater of fact, if you don’t know how to market then you probably won’t ever build a big enough network to sustain a business anyway.
It’s a common mistake to stop at just free training regardless of how great is it… the paid version is usually better and especially so if the free stuff is really good.
I suggest you start where you can comfortably afford, consume it multiple times to ingest what is being taught, and apply everything you can wring out of it then upgrade.
This will help you avoid the next mistake…
7. Not Enough Marketing "Doing"
Video are great, eBooks are fine but whose watching/reading yours while you’re here watching/reading mine? This is a little song I made up on the spot for you. I hope you like it and remember it because you should always know the answer to that question.
To much ‘learning’ and not enough doing leads to vitamin M deficiency where the M stands for Money.
If you invest your money into a training product then invest the time as well into applying what was taught. Don’t just do it half way. At the very least keep testing what you bought until your convinced your gonna keep it. Hopefully, it is before the "money back guarantee" ends and you can return any reputable product.
In order to master anything you have to apply regularly and consistently. If you have feelings over overwhelm is most likely caused by getting to far ahead of yourself with the learning before your doing has caught up with your brain.
Kinda like reading an algebra book without mastering fractions.
Understandably, doing can be hindered by things like overwhelm, misunderstanding or lack of discipline and plain ole’ laziness. If you are the latter you’ve wasted your time reading this far but if you are the former then let’s continue.
8. Resisting/avoiding help and direction from a mastermind group, mentor or coach.
As talented as your were created (or have evolved) to be, life is design to keep you interdependent on other people.
Shocking I know… But just think of all the inventions that were interdependent on the dude who created the light bulb. And even that was interdependent on someone developing how to harness electricity.
There would be no Internet, because they’d be not bulbs! Holly webinars! Where would e all be with out the Internet?
We are not here to go it alone but to leverage the strengths and talents of others to amplify own and diminish the impact of our weaknesses.
That’s the power of teachers, mentors, coaches, and groups. Resisting, avoiding or devaluing this fact will keep you broke busted and disgusted for longer that you have to be.
9. Underestimating your expertise/passions and your "newness"
The easiest way to brand yourself as an expert in your field is to choose a field you are already an expert in and create your online identity around it.
This concept is so simple it is easily and constantly overlooked as the best foundation to your lead generation empire.
Want to get started fast with lead generation? Want to never run out of topics to write about in your articles or talk about in your videos? Want to speak with passion and conviction like a Jonathan Budd ?
Prospects will have to trust you and your site as an authority on their topic of interest. So, pick a topic that your are already always talking about, learning about and even debating from the get-go.
Here on the Internet life experience is just as valuable as formal training when it comes to lead generation. Therefore ALL of your gifts, and talents will add value to your offer. Now is not the time to discredit them.
Your newness to the Internet as a marketer could be an angle to your merit in the eyes of your potential prospects as you will not be perceived as an "big egoed Guru" of sorts while still being professional and knowledgeable.
10. Always Looking for the Easy Button
Find yourself with more going out that coming in? The symptom that you committed this mistake is the feeling of being overspent.
By now you would have discovered that most marketing courses are all starting to sound the same. The problem is you keep looking the the better, faster, easier version or you don’t really know what it is you really need so you figure you’ll buy everything and then figure it out later.
There only one way to build a lead attracting, money getting system and website… one word and one video and one mistake at a time.
No ready made, push button, fool proof system will every solve that problem better and more abundantly than good ole’ hard work.
Learn, apply rinse and repeat.
The only ‘smart cut’ is leveraging the land mind maps of those who came before you, as mentioned above. Although the journey doesn’t get any shorter… But you do have a better chance of making into the land of Internet prosperity with less agony.

Your welcome Daphne,
Funny thing is, we will all still continue to make mistakes… some will hinder our sucess and some will even advance it! As long as our hearts are in the right place and we continue to learn and grow and apply we will be ahead of the game.
Malika
Hi Malika
I like your style, as I think I have told you before. You got what it takes.
I make mistakes daily, I still try to learn something new everyday. But the thing is, if we don’t learn from our mistakes, then we will not get past them.
I have several pages that I work with, A blog, A website ( that seriously needs to get internet ready), A few Squidoos.
My main problem is maintaining the necessary time and focus to get there.
Anyway. Love your style.
Sandy McFerren
I know what you mean Sandy. The best advice I can give you is this: Make sure you get a crystal clear road map of where your website is going. That way you will know if steps you are taking is putting you closer to where you wanna go or putting you off course before you make it.
Regardless of how slow you may move along this map or how many mistakes you make you’ll atleast bemoving in the right direction!
If you need help with that just meet me in the forums with your specific questions
Malika
Great tips for newbies. The thing is, we’ll never know if we’re really getting into the right company unless we try. We sometimes need to take a risk to find it out for ourselves.

That’s why we shouldn’t “get into” any company. We should represent products that solve problems of people who we truly desire to help.
This gives you flexibility to provide different product and service options for resolving the same issue instead of being tied to just one company or the next.
As a marketer with a good grasp on the wants and needs of your target audience you’ll have a pretty good idea if a MLM/NM company has products and or services that will fly or die before you present it as an option.
